ACT Requirements for International Student-Athletes Pursuing U.S. College Scholarships

What is the ACT?

The ACT (American College Testing) exam is a university entrance test accepted by nearly every U.S. college. It's an alternative to the SAT, and some student-athletes find it more straightforward. The ACT is made up of:

English (Grammar and Usage)
Math (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry)
Reading (Comprehension)
Science (Reasoning)
Optional Essay (Writing)

Scoring: Each section is scored from 1–36, with a composite average also from 1–36. A score of 20–25 is considered solid; top schools may require 28+.

ACT and Sports Scholarships

Just like the SAT, the ACT plays a major role in eligibility:

NCAA Division I & II: Your GPA + ACT score must meet a minimum sliding scale to be eligible. The NCAA Eligibility Center accepts either SAT or ACT scores.
NAIA: Accepts the ACT as a path to eligibility. A composite score of 18 or higher can meet NAIA standards if combined with a strong GPA.
NJCAA: Doesn’t require the ACT, but it may help if you plan to transfer later to an NCAA or NAIA university.

Academic eligibility determines whether a coach can legally offer you a scholarship. Even if you're a talented athlete, weak academics can cost you an opportunity.

ACT for UK & International Students

International students can register for the ACT via www.act.org. There are approved test centres in most major UK cities and around the world.

Start Early: Take the ACT in Year 12 or early Year 13 to leave time for a retake if needed.
Use Free Resources: ACT.org offers practice exams - paid courses and tutors are also available.
Know Your Goal Score: Aim for at least a composite 20–23 for NCAA D-II, and 25+ for higher academic awards.

BOOSTING Academic Aid

Even if your sports offer is partial, a high ACT score can unlock academic scholarships. Many U.S. universities combine both, making it possible to cover most or all of your costs. Example - You receive a 50% sports scholarship and your ACT score qualifies you for a 30% academic scholarship – that’s 80% of your fees covered.

Do You Need the ACT?

While many colleges are now test optional, student-athletes are often still required to submit ACT or SAT scores for NCAA/NAIA eligibility. Submitting strong scores can also differentiate you from other international applicants.
